Why is fish oil so important for your canine?
Fish oil supports your dog/s heart health, promotes a silky coat, reduces itchy, flaky skin and helps relieve allergies and joint pain. It can even help strengthen their immune system and fight canine cancer. Fish oil contains Omega 3 fatty acids, a "good" fat that helps create important hormones that regulate blood flow and inflammation.
Omega 3s are found in cold water fish, shellfish, plant&nut oils and flaxseed. They balance out Omega 6 fatty acids found in processed foods and grains. Most kibble is made with meat from corn fed animals or refined oil which are very high in Omega 6 fatty acids which results in an over abundance in their system.
Another component of Omega 3 is DHA which aids puppies' brain and eye development. It also improves cognitive function in older dogs. Research shows that Omega 3s can also help treat canine arthritis and chronic kidney disease!
What to look for in a fish oil:
- Ethyl ester oil is concentrated and distilled, removing impurities. It has the highest levels of DHA and EPA which prevents blood clotting and reduces triglyceride levels in the blood and helps reduce pain/swelling.
- Fish oil turns rancid quickly, so resist the urge to buy in bulk! Make sure the oil is in a dark bottle and refrigerate after opening.
- Consider the sourcing! Algae oil, green lipped mussels and ahi flower are all sustainable sources that are safe for our oceans.
